Adding and importing keywords

Add your own keywords one at a time, as a list or from a CSV file, then measure, rename or remove them.

Keywords reach your project in three ways. Only Admins can add, rename or delete them; Editors and Viewers see the list.

WayWhat happens
At setupRankfender reads your site and picks up to 30 searches. Nothing to do. See how they are picked.
GenerateAdds up to 30 more searches from your site, measured and judged the same way.
Add KeywordsAdds the searches you choose: one, a list, or a CSV file.

Add your own keywords

  1. Press Add Keywords

At the top of Keywords › Opportunities. If setup found no keywords, the empty list offers "Add keywords" instead.
  2. Pick a tab

    • Single Keyword: type one search.
    • List: "Keywords (one per line or comma-separated)".
    • CSV Upload: choose a .csv file.
  3. Press Add Keywords

Searches you already have are skipped, whatever their capitals. The window confirms how many were added.

CSV format

One search per line. Only the first column is read, so other columns can stay. A first line that contains the word "keyword" is treated as a header and skipped. The file must end in .csv.

After you add them

New keywords arrive without Google numbers, with the source "Manual". Measure them in one of two ways:

  • Open a keyword and press the refresh icon ("Refresh metrics for this keyword") to measure that one now.
  • Press Refresh to measure the whole list: once a week on Essential, once a day on Professional, any time on Business and Agencies.

Measuring uses credits; see Monthly credits.

Plan limits

Your plan sets how many keywords a project keeps: 50 on Essential (and pay as you go), 150 on Professional, 350 on Business, unlimited on Agencies. At the limit, Add Keywords is greyed out and Generate only fills the room left. Remove a few keywords or upgrade to add more.

Rename or remove a keyword

  • Edit keyword (pencil): change the text, press Enter to save or Esc to cancel.
  • Delete keyword (bin): removes the keyword. Generate never suggests it again.
  • Both icons disappear once a keyword is targeted, so a planned article keeps its keyword.

Tip

Write searches the way buyers type them, in your project's language. To see what each number means, read Keyword Metrics Explained.
