Smart Discovery
How Rankfender automatically discovers your competitors using search data and AI.
How Smart Discovery Works
Rankfender automatically identifies your competitors through a two-stage discovery process. When you create a new project or trigger a competitor refresh, the system analyzes your domain, target country, and industry to build a comprehensive competitive landscape without requiring manual input.
DataForSEO Discovery
The primary discovery method uses DataForSEO to analyze your domain against real search data. The system evaluates three key factors to identify competitors:
- Domain analysis - Your domain is compared against other domains ranking for similar keywords in organic search results.
- Country targeting - Competitors are filtered based on your project's target country to ensure geographic relevance.
- Industry classification - Your industry setting helps narrow the competitive field to businesses operating in the same or adjacent market segments.
DataForSEO returns a ranked list of domains that compete with yours in organic search, along with initial domain metrics such as the number of common keywords and estimated organic traffic overlap.
AI Fallback Discovery
If the DataForSEO discovery returns insufficient results (for example, if your domain is new or operates in a niche market), Rankfender activates an AI-powered fallback. The AI analyzes your brand book, including your brand description, target audience, product offerings, and industry context, to identify likely competitors.
The AI fallback is particularly useful for:
- New domains with limited search history
- Niche markets with fewer direct competitors in search data
- Brands that compete primarily in AI-generated responses rather than traditional search
Competitor Enrichment
After discovery, each identified competitor is automatically enriched with detailed domain metrics. These metrics provide a baseline for ongoing competitive tracking:
- Authority Score - A composite metric reflecting the overall strength and credibility of the competitor's domain.
- Backlinks - The total number of backlinks pointing to the competitor's domain, indicating link-building strength.
- Common Keywords - The number of keywords where both your domain and the competitor's domain appear in search results, showing direct keyword overlap.
Refreshing Competitors
You can trigger a competitor refresh at any time from the Competitors settings page using the Refresh Competitors action. When you refresh:
- All automatically discovered competitors are deleted and re-discovered using the latest search data.
- Manually added competitors are preserved and remain unchanged.
- Competitor enrichment data is updated for all competitors, including manually added ones.
This ensures your competitive landscape stays current as markets evolve, while protecting any manual curation you have performed.
Discovery Limitations
Smart Discovery works best when your project has a well-configured brand book with accurate industry and audience information. The quality of results depends on the amount of search data available for your domain. For brand-new domains, the AI fallback may be the primary source of competitor identification until sufficient organic search data accumulates.
