This feature is currently in development and will be available in a future release.
Introduction
Content Gap analysis will compare your website's content coverage against your configured competitors to reveal opportunities you are currently missing. By systematically identifying the keywords competitors rank for, the topics they cover, and the depth at which they address subjects, this tool will help you build a content strategy that closes gaps and captures traffic you are leaving on the table.
The results from Content Gap analysis feed directly into Rankfender's Content module, allowing you to go from identifying an opportunity to generating a fully optimized article with a single click.
Types of Content Gaps
The Content Gap tool will identify four distinct types of gaps, each representing a different kind of opportunity:
| Gap Type | Description | Opportunity |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword Gap | Specific keywords your competitors rank for in the top 20 results that your site does not rank for at all. | Create new content targeting these keywords to capture search traffic your competitors are already receiving. |
| Topic Gap | Entire subject areas or content categories that competitors have covered with multiple articles but you have not addressed. | Develop a content cluster around the missing topic to establish topical authority and capture a broader range of related searches. |
| Depth Gap | Topics where you have surface-level content but competitors have comprehensive, in-depth guides that outperform yours. | Expand and enrich your existing content to match or exceed the depth of competing pages, improving your ranking potential. |
| Trending Gap | Emerging topics in your niche that are gaining search volume but neither you nor your competitors have covered yet. | Be first to publish authoritative content on trending topics, establishing early rankings before competition increases. |
Competitor Comparison
The Content Gap tool will use the competitors you have configured in your project settings. The number of competitors you can analyze depends on your plan:
- Professional: Up to 3 competitors
- Agencies: Up to 10 competitors
- Enterprise: Unlimited competitors
For each competitor, the tool will analyze their entire content footprint, identifying every keyword they rank for and every topic they have published content about. This data is then compared against your own site's content to surface the gaps. You can view results filtered by individual competitor or see a combined view that highlights opportunities where multiple competitors have coverage and you do not.
Keyword Gap Analysis
The keyword gap analysis will present a detailed list of keywords that your competitors rank for but your site does not. For each keyword, you will see:
- The keyword and its monthly search volume
- Which competitors rank for it and their current positions
- Keyword difficulty score estimating how hard it will be to rank
- The competitor page URL that ranks for the keyword
- A relevance score indicating how closely the keyword relates to your niche
Keywords can be sorted and filtered by search volume, difficulty, relevance, or competitor overlap count. This allows you to quickly prioritize the most valuable opportunities based on your strategy, whether that means targeting high-volume keywords, low-difficulty quick wins, or highly relevant terms that align with your core business.
Topic Gap Analysis
Beyond individual keywords, the tool will cluster competitor content into topics and identify entire subject areas you have not covered. Topic gaps are identified by analyzing the semantic relationships between competitor pages and grouping them by theme. For each topic gap, you will see the number of articles competitors have published, the total combined search volume of keywords within the topic, and a recommended content plan showing the articles you should create to build authority in that area.
Depth Gap Analysis
Depth gaps represent the most nuanced type of content opportunity. These occur when you have already published content on a topic but your page lacks the comprehensiveness that competing pages offer. The tool will compare your page against top-ranking competitors across several dimensions:
- Word count and content length
- Number of subtopics covered
- Use of supporting media such as images, videos, and infographics
- Inclusion of data, statistics, and citations
- Structural elements like tables, comparison charts, and FAQ sections
For each depth gap, the tool will generate specific recommendations about what to add to your existing content, making it easy to enhance pages without starting from scratch.
Trending Gap Detection
The Trending Gap feature will monitor search trends in your niche and alert you to emerging topics that are gaining traction. By identifying these trends early, you can publish content before the competition intensifies. Trending gaps are sourced from search volume trend data, social media signals, and news cycle analysis. Each trending topic will include an estimated growth trajectory to help you decide whether the opportunity warrants immediate action.
Integration with Content Module
Every content gap identified by the tool will include a direct action button that sends the opportunity to the Content module's article generator. When you click to create content for a gap:
- The target keyword and topic context are automatically populated
- Competitor content is analyzed to inform the article outline
- The generator uses your Brand Book settings to match your tone and style
- Internal linking suggestions are included based on your existing content
- The article is created with SEO best practices already applied
This seamless workflow means you can go from discovering a gap to having a publish-ready article in minutes rather than days.
Filtering and Prioritization
With potentially hundreds or thousands of content gaps to consider, effective filtering and prioritization are essential. The tool will provide filters for keyword difficulty range, minimum and maximum search volume, competitor overlap (how many competitors cover the gap), content type (blog post, landing page, resource page), and relevance to your tracked keywords. A built-in prioritization algorithm will also rank gaps by a combined opportunity score that factors in search volume, difficulty, competitor coverage, and relevance to help you focus on the gaps most likely to deliver meaningful results.
